Activities for the girls

My classes officially started up again on Monday, and Friday is the King's birthday/fathers' day, so everyone has Friday off, making it a short week of peace and quiet for me to get off to a good start with my winter quarter.  With that in mind, I tried to get as much done on Monday as possible.

Tuesday was also a work day, but I took a break for some play.  Elena has had a couple play dates, but mostly she hangs out around the house or in our neighborhood.  I thought it was time to try out a new environment, so I invited a couple friends of mine who also have January babies to try out a Little Gym class with me and Elena.

She's just getting over a cold, so she wasn't in top form on Tuesday, but she is also naturally cautious.  She spent the first few minutes sitting perfectly still and just looking around.  The teachers were blowing bubbles which they explained are good for helping babies practice tracking moving objects.  Elena was definitely tracking them, but more in threat assessment mode than in wonder.  The other baby who ended up coming was swatting at the bubbles with a big grin on his face, but Elena just watched.  When one popped near her, she flinched.

I could tell she wasn't totally freaked out though, because she let one of the teachers hold her and move her arms and legs around in baby exercises.  The only point at which she objected was when the teacher flipped her over to try a somersault.  Elena made it clear that she was not okay with upside down.

By the end of class, she was crawling around, pulling herself up, and playing.

We're going to go back next week, and hopefully she'll warm up faster.

Wednesday was Vivian's last swim lesson of the season.  She has made so much progress!  She is swimming around with pride, and today the teacher even had them jump off the starting blocks.  She's got a ways to go on her form,

but she definitely feels comfortable in the water.
