Happy 6th Birthday Elena!

I cannot believe that Elena is six years old!  We had a couple different birthday celebrations for her, but our first week back in Bogota, she talked us into going out for "fancy lunch" just because she wanted to.  We figured she missed dressing up for dinner on the cruise, so we took her to La Brasserie and let her wear her tiara.

The Sunday of her birthday was the Pro Bowl, which we didn't really care about, but we figured we could use it as an excuse to have friends over for a non birthday party.  We wanted Elena to have fun playing with friends, but without all the birthday party trappings.  Instead, I made muffins, which are usually a hit with her buddies, and we put a candle in and sang her a quick happy birthday.

Two of her friends couldn't resist though, and they brought her some fun things to play with.

Elena's actual birthday was on Wednesday, so my plan was to bring cupcakes for her class the way we've done in the past.  What I hadn't planned for was that this year Elena was old enough to "help" out.

Elena had a vision of Minnie Mouse cupcakes which was beyond me, but I can make pink icing, and Vivian had the brilliant idea of sticking oreos in them for ears, ta-dah, Minnie Mouse cupcakes!

On the morning of her birthday, Elena was anointed the birthday queen and was thrilled to discover a Spider-Man birthday card from Safta and Grandpa, who for once listened to my pleas for no more toys.

The "Minnie Mouse" concept was a hit, especially for the kids who liked oreos and for the one kid in her class who is lactose intolerant.  I learned that oreos are vegan!

For dinner, Elena requested mussels.  Since we had just been out for mussels, and it was pretty late on a school night, we Rappied some mussel pasta for her.  She was very happy with the result and promptly inhaled them all.

Our weeks are so hectic, I completely forgot about the package of presents from Grandpa and Grandma Goerss, but it made for a nice Saturday surprise, and then the girls had time to actually play with some of the presents.

Being six brought her to another milestone, her first loose tooth.  She was a bit panicked about it, so she insisted on coming on the teacher bus with me in case it fell out on the way home.  She recorded this little video to explain why she was on the teacher bus with me.

Of course, her worry was premature.  It took another ten days for her first tooth to fall out.  Of course, it happened walking home in the rain, but she was totally calm about it.

We are so proud of our big six year old!
