Getting the Christmas Season Started

The Saturday after Thanksgiving, I needed a day off.  Jeff and I left the girls to their own devices and binge watched Alias Grace on Netflix.  I had promised Vivian that we would decorate for Christmas after Thanksgiving, so on Sunday I had to keep my word and start decorating.

A lot of local shops started their Christmas decorating right after Halloween.  Our local store, Cachivaches, looks like Christmas exploded everywhere.

I got the Christmas village and other decorations out, and it's getting mostly set up, but since it's our first Christmas in a new place and we've switched back to 110 power, everything is not photo ready yet.  I got a cute picture of Jeff and Viv doing the star at the top of the tree though.

And Elena insisted on decorating the little tree all by herself.

Target had a sale on Christmas trees this past weekend, and, huge surprise, actually shipped one to us, so we have to un-decorate our Thai tree and redecorate before we're fully Christmas ready.

On Tuesday, Jeff and I finally got a date night in.  We went to Club Colombia which is not only a beer, but also a nice Colombian restaurant near our place.

It's in this old house.

I really liked the entrance way.

Each room has slightly different decor.  We went quite early, so that Piedad didn't have to stay too late with the girls, so we had one dining room almost completely to ourselves.

They have lots of outdoor seating too, which might be fun to try for lunch or brunch.  We were feeling adventurous, so we got the tasting menu.

Our waiter recommended a Pinot Noir to go along with everything, and he was right.

Our favorites were the cheesy arepa with chorizo and guacamole,

the shrimp with coconut rice,

and the coconut flan.

This weekend has been crazy busy.  Friday was December 1st, and we had a really unusual school day.  School started three hours late, and a large part of the afternoon was dedicated to holiday performances.  Elena's class sang a few songs, and Vivian performed a play with her drama class.

Then, when school ended (at 5pm!!!), there was a Christmas fair set up with food and crafts, and the whole thing finished with a bang with fireworks at 6:30.

The girls had a prime fireworks viewing spot on the swings.

When we got home, I gave them new, matching winter PJs.  They were thrilled.

In fact, they liked their matching shirts so much that they kept them on the next day to go to the Christmas party at the Ambassador's house.

There was a Santa Claus there, and Elena went through this hilarious cycle of being really excited and running toward him, then stopping and backing away slowly.  She finally worked up the courage to go say hi when he told her she could try out his bell.

She also got a candy cane, so she said we had to go tell Vivian to come say hi to Santa.

Vivian didn't really want to sit in his lap, but he didn't give her a choice.

She got her candy cane at the end though, so she was happy.  The kids spent most of the time running around and playing with other kids on the huge grounds.

We came home for a short break, and then we went to yet another party.  One of the teachers hosted a belated Thanksgiving feast, and there were tons of adults and children, so we had another late night hanging out with friends.

This morning Vivian had a play date at a friend's house, and we had a bunch of people over for football in the afternoon.  I'm really looking forward to our holiday break, because as much fun as we're having, the pace is a bit crazy.
